Next Thursday, February 2 at 4pm in Wyly Auditorium The Waggonner Center will host a talk by Jessica Luther about her new book, Unsportsmanlike Conduct: College Football and the Politics of Rape. This book explores the problem of sexual assault on college campuses with relation to college athletics. It investigates the traditional responses of coaches, universities, and communities after a football player is accused, charged, and/or convicted of sexual assault. Jessica argues that these responses to sexual assault resemble a tired, but trusted playbook that works for everyone involved except the victim. Unsportsmanlike Conduct suggests how we can begin to replace the traditional responses to sexual assault on campus and finally address the roots of this issue.
Jessica Luther is a freelance journalist and writer whose work focuses on the intersection of sports and violence off the field of play. Her writing has appeared in ESPN Magazine, New York Times Magazine, the Texas Observer, Texas Monthly, and Sports Illustrated. She regularly appears on national media broadcasts, including NPR and Outside the Lines on ESPN. Along with Dan Soloman, Jessica broke the story about sexual assault and the Baylor football program in August 2015. For her work on this story she was awarded the Halberstam Award by Sports Illustrated, and selected by espnW as an IMPACT25 honoree.
